The Environment Agency has received an application to vary the Radioactive substances Regulation (RSR) environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 for Hinkley Point B power station from EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd The application contains a description of the proposed changes to:
- remove Weekly Advisory Limits (WALs) associated with all gaseous radionuclide limits.
- removal of Sulphur-35 (S-35), Argon-41 (Ar-41) and Iodine-131 (I-131) as gaseous discharge disposals.
- removal of Sulphur-35 (S;35) as an aqueous discharge disposal.

Regulated facility type:
Radioactive substances Regulation (RSR) activity. The Hinkley Point B power station is operated by EDF Energy Nuclear Generation Ltd (EDF). Hinkley Point B power station started producing electricity in 1976, using two Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors (AGR). In 2022 the site stopped generating with both of the reactor’s shutdown and isolated. The site is currently in the defueling phase and working towards Fuel Free Status. One of the reactors has been declared Fuel Free and it is anticipated that the remaining reactor will be declared fuel free by the end of 2025.

- completed application forms
- a summary of the management system and proposed operating techniques
- technical justification document of the proposed changes.
- Strategic Best Available Techniques (BAT) assessment of key station waste stream.
