This report builds on 3 decades of UKHSA research into the radiological impact of transporting radioactive materials, focusing on the medical sector where usage is rapidly increasing. Previous studies assessed individual transport modes across nuclear, medical, and industrial sectors. This updated approach examines all modes within the medical sector for a more comprehensive view. Medical transport was prioritised due to rising demand for diagnostic and therapeutic isotopes and gaps identified in earlier assessments.

Workers and the public can be exposed to external radiation from radioactive packages during handling and transport. To evaluate these risks, UKHSA:

  • analysed shipment data from manufacturers and hospitals
  • conducted site visits
  • estimated annual doses to workers and the public

These findings were compared with previous studies to identify trends and confirm compliance with safety standards.

Results show that exposures remain well within regulatory limits, despite significant changes in supply chains and increased reliance on international imports. Advances in nuclear medicine and evolving logistics highlight the need for continued monitoring to maintain safety and resilience in the UK’s radiopharmaceutical transport system.
