Details

Natural England proposes to vary the boundary of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) to include 129 square kilometres of additional land. AONBs have been rebranded to National Landscapes but are still legally referred to as AONBs.

The notice gives details of:

  • how to make representations in relation to the draft order
  • locations where you may examine hard copies of the draft order and maps

The draft designation maps (maps 1 to 17) show the land being proposed as extension areas to the Surrey Hills AONB.

The key map shows the relative locations of maps 1 to 17.

There have been 2 formal statutory and public consultations on the proposed extensions to the AONB. All the relevant information from these can be found at the links below.

The first took place between 7 March 2023 and 13 June 2023, and received 1518 responses.

The second took place between 17 September 2024 and 19 December 2024 and received over 375 responses.

Natural England considered the representations made at both consultations and published its analysis reports. These included Natural England’s responses to issues raised and subsequent changes to the proposal on the consultation website.

You can also find the 3 updated technical assessments; the Natural Beauty, Desirability and Boundary reports, on the consultation website.

On 24 September 2025, Natural England’s Board reviewed the proposals and formally approved:

  • the final technical assessments of whether Natural England should vary the boundary of the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB)
  • a draft Order with regard to the extension of the Surrey Hills AONB
  • carrying out a formal period of notice (the notice period)

Any representation with reference to the draft Order, whether objecting to or in support of the draft Order, or proposing an amendment to the proposed boundary, may be sent by email to: surreyhillsaonbboundaryreview@naturalengland.org.uk  or, in writing clearly marked ‘For Natural England’, to Alana Jones, Natural England, Seacole Building, 2 Marsham Street, London, SW1P 4DF.

Natural England must receive all submissions before Wednesday 14 January 2026.
