This independent research was carried out by Mott MacDonald to form part of the evidence base for the Integrated Rail Plan, specifically by examining strategic alternatives to the HS2 Eastern Leg.

It presents 5 alternative concepts to the previously planned HS2 East Leg including:

  • an upgrade to the existing Midland Mainline and East Coast Mainline
  • 4 infrastructure packages combining a new high-speed line and upgrades to the existing Midland Mainline and East Coast Mainline
