Standing environment groups

Details of the 14 standing environment groups in England and Wales including contingency plans.

Detail

There are 14 standing environment groups (SEGs) around England and Wales. Northern Ireland and Scotland each has their own group. SEGs are responsible for a particular area of coastline and provide information and advice to the Secretary of States’ Representative (SOSREP) on:

  • conservation
  • fisheries
  • human health
  • best environmental practice to dispose of wrecked ships and spoilt cargo
  • how to deal with oiled wildlife and environmental monitoring

SEG members may include representatives from:

  • MMO coastal office
  • Environment Agency
  • Health Protection Agency
  • Natural England, Joint Nature Conservation Council or Natural Resources Wales
  • local councils
