The Environment Agency has received an application to vary an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 involving substantial change to a permit from Johnson Matthey plc.

This chemicals site operates a variety of complex activities mainly involving the refining of precious metals, development of speciality chemicals, and subsequent processing into a diverse range of products. The scheduled activities that are changing as a result of this application are:

  • Section 4.1 Part A(1) (a) (vii) Producing organic chemicals such as organometallic compounds. The operator is applying to vary this activity to expand the existing homogeneous catalyst plant (HomCat), including redirecting abated emissions.

  • Section 4.2 Part A(1) (a) (iv) Producing inorganic chemicals such as salts. The operator is applying to vary this activity to install a new Third Century Refinery, which will replace the existing Platinum Group Metals Refinery, and be able to accept waste classified under five additional waste codes.

  • Section 4.2 Part A(1) (c) (viii) Any manufacturing activity involving the use of, or the use or recovery of, any compound of platinum. The operator is applying to vary this activity to allow the use of iridium.
