Safety Bulletin 5: SafeLink EPIRB product recall

Published 25 January 2016

Summary of issue

Kannad Marine has highlighted a concern with two of its EPIRB products which could mean they fail in an emergency. A global recall has been initiated for the affected beacon types. Owners of affected beacons should take note of the issues and actions required within this safety bulletin.

The Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) of the SAFELINK Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) “Orolia Limited”, has become aware that certain “Kannad SAFELINK EPIRBs” may not work in an emergency.

The cause of the problem is ageing of the EPIRBs’ yellow plastic body under specific environmental conditions which could impact their effectiveness in service.

Only the beacon types listed below are affected:

  • Part #: K1202311, EPIRB SAFELINK Manual + GPS, All date ranges
  • Part #: K1202367, EPIRB SAFELINK Auto GPS, All date ranges

Actions Required

Owners of the affected EPIRB types should not rely on these products as Search and Rescue beacons on board any Ship or Vessel.

As a matter of urgency owners should register their affected beacons, their location and contact details via the dedicated website:

Once registered, the OEM will direct owners to local partners to arrange a replacement of affected beacons with a Kannad Sport Pro + Auto or Manual, with a 5 year warranty, free of charge.
