Notification of MED Type Approval withdrawal and associated processes to follow.
Summary of issue
The MCA, as the UK Market Surveillance Authority for marine equipment, is aware of the withdrawal of Marine Equipment Directive (MED) approval certification for certain Tecnicomar sewage treatment plant products from February 2019. See Annex 1 for the list of products and associated withdrawn certification.
The MCA wishes to inform UK ship operators that, as long as the MARPOL sewage certification is in place, for equipment already installed on board before February 2019, the MED Certificate withdrawal will not impact on the statutory certification compliance of UK vessels – this position should be the same elsewhere.
The UK has informed the European Commission, the Notified Body, and Manufacturer that the MCA is reviewing the risk to the marine environment as may or may not be posed by the existing installed Tecnicomar equipment for which MED certification has been withdrawn.
Until the MCA review of risk has concluded we do not have full objective evidence of the need to take action on statutory certification. Once the evaluation of risk has completed, we shall consider the most appropriate action to take, equal to the risks, if any, that may be identified, and the responsibilities placed upon the MCA by UK national legislation.
Actions to take
No actions are to be taken while the MCA reviews the potential risks to the Marine Environment. If in the future any action is deemed by the MCA to be required, further industry notification shall be issued by the MCA. Any UK ship Master with a concern may contact Marine Technology in the MCA to request further advice and/or a letter to be held on board.
