Public bodies 2014: summary data

Updated 5 October 2015

1. Introduction

The main report of Public Bodies 2014 sets out an annual update of the progress in rationalising the public bodies landscape, the savings made and the legacy delivered by the work on sponsorship and triennial review programme, which will enable reform to continue after the public bodies reform programme is completed.

Public Bodies 2014 contains a single transparent source of top-level data on all non-departmental public bodies, executive agencies and non-ministerial departments. The data directory, which forms Annex A, shows a snapshot of public bodies as of 31 March 2014 unless otherwise stated.

These data are published in order to make the public bodies more transparent, which in turn helps taxpayers hold decision-makers to account. Public Bodies 2014 is an online publication and the data will be updated quarterly, where applicable, for improved transparency.

Many of the bodies in Public Bodies 2014 were reviewed in the 2010 Public Bodies Reform Programme.

Figures for ‘appointments’ refer to the makeup of boards, including the chairs, as of 31 March 2014.

This table indicates the diversity of boards as at 31 March 2014. The high number of unknown and undeclared entries for ethnicity and disability entries means caution should be exercised before drawing any conclusions from the information in those areas. Percentages given are based on number of known declarations.

The Cabinet Office publishes information separately on the percentage of new appointments of women to public positions.

  1. Whilst NHS England is an Executive NDPB, its profile has changed since the 2013 directory and it now carries a £95 billion NHS budget previously not reported in this exercise. To obtain level comparisons, its financial data have been excluded from totals in this year’s dataset.  2
