This document provides guidance for the surveillance, investigation and management of suspected polio cases in the UK. This is part of the UK commitment to the WHO global polio eradication programme. This document also includes guidance on enhanced enteroviral surveillance.
These guidelines are aimed at public health professionals and laboratory staff and include:
- Surveillance of suspected cases of AFP (acute flaccid paralysis)
- Advice on public health management of suspected cases and consideration of post exposure prophylaxis
- Appropriate samples required for confirmation of infection
- Containment requirements for storage and usage of polio viruses
