27 February 2026: Outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in Bosnia and Herzegovina

1. Purpose

To inform you that, due to a recent outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Bosnia and Herzegovina, consignments from Bosnia and Herzegovina of fresh meat of poultry and poultry meat products (unless subject to heat treatment ‘D’ or higher) should be held.

2. Background

Bosnia and Herzegovina have notified WOAH of an outbreak of HPAI in a commercial poultry flock, which was confirmed on 25 February 2026 (WAHIS).

Defra is currently assessing the situation and will implement import restrictions in due course through amendment to third country lists.

A separate OVS note will be issued when restrictions have been implemented.

In the meantime, any consignments from Bosnia and Herzegovina of the following commodities should be held:

  • fresh poultry meat
  • poultry meat products, unless subject to treatment ‘D’ or higher.
  • petfood containing poultry meat
