15 December 2025: Outbreak of peste des petits ruminants virus in Croatia

Purpose
To inform you that, following a recent outbreak of peste des petits ruminants virus (PPR), imports of the following commodities from Croatia should be held while restrictions are implemented:
- live sheep and goats (GBHC 630 and 631)
- ovine and caprine germplasm (GBHC 820, 821 and 822)
- raw milk and raw milk products derived from ovine and caprine animals (GBHC 410 and 411)
- fresh and chilled (untreated) hides and skins of ovine and caprine animals (GBHC 540)
- untreated wool and hair from ovine and caprine animals (GBHC 586)
Background
Croatia reported their first case of PPR on 14 December 2025: Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries - Plague of small ruminants confirmed for the first time in the Republic of Croatia. This outbreak was confirmed on 13 December 2025 in sheep in Bogdanovići, in the municipality of Prgomet in Split-Dalmatia county.
The UK Office for SPS Trade Assurance will amend its country listings shortly to temporarily suspend imports from Croatia of the following commodities:
- live sheep and goats
- ovine and caprine germplasm
- raw milk and raw milk products derived from ovine and caprine animals
The UK Office for SPS Trade Assurance is also coordinating the delivery of safeguard declarations to prohibit the import from Croatia of untreated wool and hair and untreated hides and skins of sheep and goats.
Separate OVS notes will be issued when these restrictions are implemented. In the meantime, any consignments from Croatia of the above-mentioned commodities should be held.
