02 June 2026: Aujeszky’s disease in the United States of America

Updated 5 June 2026

OVS note number: 2026/27

Date: 02 June 2026

Purpose

To inform you that, following a recent outbreak of Aujeszky’s disease in a commercial pig farm in the United States of America (USA), imports of meat products containing domestic porcine offal from the USA must now comply with treatment ‘C’ or higher.

Background

The USA notified WOAH of its first case of Aujeszky’s disease which was confirmed on 30 April 2026 on a farm in Hardin County, Iowa: WAHIS. The USA had been considered free of Aujeszky’s disease in commercial swine operations since 2004.

To mitigate against the risk of Aujeszky’s disease, the UK Office for SPS Trade Assurance
amended the fresh meat of ungulates on 1 May 2026 to suspend imports of domestic
porcine offal from the USA (see OVS note 2026/25).

Following review, the UK Office for SPS Trade Assurance has today (2 June 2026)
amended the meat products list. The amendment inserts footnote ‘l’ in the USA’s entry to stipulate that Treatment ‘C’ or above is required for porcine offal in meat products.

This means that only treatment ‘C’ or ‘B’ may be applied to imports of domestic porcine
offal in meat products. Treatment ‘A’ (non-specific treatment) or above remains sufficient for porcine meat products that do not contain domestic porcine offal.

Additional guidance

For porcine meat products that contain both porcine offal and porcine meat other than
offal, such as skeletal muscle meat, the following applies:

• If the raw materials are mixed prior to treatment, the whole product must be
subjected to treatment ‘C’ or above

• If the offal component is treated prior to mixing with the non-offal component, then
only the offal needs to be subjected to treatment ‘C’ or above

Please note that certification requirements prohibit the import of non-domestic porcine offal (see the SUF and SUW certificates), this also applies for meat products containing non-domestic porcine offal.
