2 February 2026: Outbreak of Sheep Pox and Goat Pox in the Republic of North Macedonia

Purpose
To inform you that, following a recent outbreak of sheep pox and goat pox (SPGP) in the Republic of North Macedonia, imports of fresh and chilled (untreated) hides and skins of sheep and goats from the Republic of North Macedonia are temporarily suspended.
Background
The Republic of North Macedonia notified the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) on 29 January 2026 of two outbreaks of SPGP, which were confirmed in the Lipkovo Region on 27 January 2026 in a backyard flock of sheep, totalling 67 animals: WAHIS.
In response to the outbreak, safeguard declarations under the Trade in Animals and Related Products (2011) been published to temporarily suspend imports into Great Britain of fresh and chilled (untreated) hides and skins of sheep and goats from the Republic of North Macedonia.

These safeguard measures apply from 3 February 2026 and will continue to apply until they are revoked or amended.
