Summary

This is an application for the issue of a new environmental permit for Crankley Point Terminal Pumping Station in Newark-on-Trent in Nottinghamshire for the storm and emergency discharges to the River Trent.

As a result of significant hydraulic deficiencies in the existing sewerage network serving the town of Newark- on-Trent almost 400 number of houses have suffered internal and external foul flooding for several decades. Ofwat have required the operator to resolve these by the end of AMP6 and, from this, the Newark Sewer Flooding Strategy has been developed and progressed to implementation. There are four key elements to the selected solution, as follows:

(a) 7.1 kilometres of sewer upsizing / duplication schemes in north, east and south Newark

(b) A 1.5 meter diameter feeder tunnel along Queens Road / Sleaford Road

(c) A 3 kilometre long, 2.8 meter diameter segmental, collector tunnel from the southern end of Millgate to the inlet to Crankley Point Sewage Treatment Works (STW)

(d) A new dual-purpose terminal pumping station at Crankley Point Sewage Treatment Works (STW)

The scheme will deliver aesthetic and environmental improvements to the Newark Branch of the River Trent since the above asset improvements allow 10 number of existing combined sewer overflows to be abandoned. There has been extensive engagement with the Environment Agency and other stakeholders and subsequent flood risk assessment and water quality modelling.
