NHSP: e-Learning for Healthcare (e-LfH) guidance

Updated 9 April 2024

Applies to England and Wales

This document explains how to use the the e-Learning for Healthcare website to:

  • set up a new Newborn Hearing Screening Programme (NHSP) user
  • run reporting

This website is where the e-learning for all screening programmes are hosted. Importantly, if a user is not set up in the correct way, local managers will not be able to track their progress.

New local managers must sign up for e-Learning for Healthcare. Contact the PHE Screening helpdesk if you have any problems.

1. Register a new user

1.1 User has an NHS email address or works for Virgincare, Northgate or Circonia

To register a new user, local managers must:

  1. Go to e-LfH and select ‘Register’ from the far right of this page. This will bring you to the registration page where you provide the new user’s work e-mail address. Ideally this will be an email address ending in ‘@nhs.net’ or ‘@nhs.uk’, although users from Virgincare, Northgate Public Services and Circonia are also able to register for NHSP.
  2. Select the ‘Register’ button.
  3. Fill in the user’s details in the ‘Your details’ section.
  4. Complete the ‘Your Current Role’ section. Search for the user’s job role from the drop-down list. For NHSP, you can select:
  • Screener
  • Health Visitor
  • Local Programme Manager
  • Administrator
  • Audiologist
  1. In the ‘Grade’ section, enter the user’s NHS Band and choose ‘Public Health Medicine’ or ‘Other’ in the ‘Primary Speciality’ drop-down list.
  2. Complete the Place of Work’ section. Select a start date for the user and type the place of work. The selection should not be the NHS Trust that the user works for. It should be the local NHSP site they are attached to. They will be able to add their Trust later.
  3. Use the appropriate site name code from the site name list. Enter the acronym on the far right of the table to find the most accurate results.
  4. Select the programmes to sign up for - ‘Newborn Hearing Screening Programme’ and ‘Antenatal and Newborn Screening: cross-programme learning’. These are under a blue heading titled ‘Public Health’.
  5. On the next ‘Registration’ page, select the ‘Continue’ button to send a registration e-mail to the new user’s e-mail address.

1.2 User does not have an NHS e-mail address

This section is relevant for users working at either NHSP Sussex and Surrey (SAS) or NHSP North Devon (DVO).

The local manager must register the user for OpenAthens. The user will then receive an e-mail from OpenAthens containing an activation link. This process may not be immediate as an OpenAthens administrator will have to verify access.

The user must then:

  1. Click the activation link in the e-mail.
  2. Enter a new password and complete the OpenAthens registration process.
  3. Start registration for the hub via OpenAthens. Enter the user’s e-mail address and newly created OpenAthens password and click ‘proceed’.
  4. Re-enter the e-mail address, then click ‘Create account’.
  5. Start the login wizard. Accept terms and conditions.
  6. Complete the Job Role section with: * Job Role: Health visitor (NMC Number required), Screener and Audiologist are all job roles (select ‘other’ if you do not have the NMC number) * Primary speciality – other * Start date (do not worry about an end date) * Place of work – use the code for the NHSP site:
    • NHSP Sussex and Surrey (SAS)
    • NHSP North Devon (DVO)
  7. Make sure the personal details are correct and select save changes.
  8. Click ‘complete registration’.
  9. Click ‘enrolment’ from the home screen.
  10. Scroll down to the heading of ‘Public Health’ and click ‘NHS Newborn Hearing Screening Programme’. Scroll to the bottom and click ‘Save changes’.
  11. Click the NHSP graphic device to get started on e-learning.

2. Log in for the first time

Once the above steps are completed, a new user must use the details sent to them in the registration e-mail to log in. They will then have to do the following.

  1. Read the terms and conditions on this page and click ‘I accept these terms and conditions.’
  2. Create a new password for the e-Learning for Healthcare platform and click ‘change password’. The password cannot be the same as the username and must:
  • be at least 8 characters long
  • contain at least:
    • one number
    • one upper case letter
    • one lower case letter
  1. Create 2 memorable answers to 2 questions and click ‘Save Security Questions’.
  2. Check the details on this page are correct and correct them if not. The ‘Grade’ should be their NHS Band, the ‘Primary Speciality’ should be Public Health and ‘Place of work’ must be the NHSP Site not the NHS Trust. Click ‘Save Changes’ if they made any changes or click ‘Existing Details Correct’ if all the details were correct.
  3. Add any missing registration information and click ‘Save Changes’ if they made any changes or click ‘Existing Details Correct’ if all the details were correct. There is a limited choice of region, but users must select whichever is closest of:
  • North
  • South
  • East
  • West 6. Check their device is compatible with the e-Learning for Healthcare website by clicking ‘Check my device’. Then click ‘Complete Registration’. This will bring the user to the home screen with the e-learning they have signed up for in a scrolling panel. 7. Add their NHS Trust by clicking ‘My Account’ and scrolling down the drop down list , clicking ‘Employment Details’ and selecting ‘Add new employment details’. Choose the same job role as selected in the registration process. Users should set:

  • ‘Grade’ - NHS Band
  • ‘Primary Speciality’ - ‘Public Health Medicine’ or ‘Other’
  • ‘Place Of Work’ - the user’s NHS Trust, University or CCG (type the name in the search bar and add a ‘Start Date’ and/or ‘End Date’)

The user can now start using the E-LfH website to complete their e-learning.

3. Use e-LfH

Click on the NHSP icon to start your e-learning.

This will take you to the next page which lists all the units for NHSP. The first time you attempt these, you must complete them in order. Units will not be unlocked until the previous unit has been passed.

To pass a unit you must achieve 80% in the quiz at the end of the unit. If you do not pass, we suggest that you read through the unit again before retrying.

4. Certificates

When you have passed a unit, a certificate is available. You will then be able to access the next unit.

Once you have completed/passed all units for a programme, you will be able to access a programme certificate. To do this:

  1. Select ‘My e-Learning’.
  2. Select the gold certificate next to the programme.

This document explains how to use the reporting functionality on the e-Learning for Healthcare platform to track your team’s progress and see who has registered for e-learning as part of their continuing professional development (CPD).

5. Reports

To access the reports, you must:

  1. Login to e-LfH.
  2. Select ‘admin’ in the top right-hand corner.
  3. Select ‘reports’ from the drop-down list.
  4. Select the tab marked ‘Public Health Administrator Reports’.

You will then have access to 7 reports detailed below. All reports can be:

  • viewed on screen
  • downloaded as a PDF
  • downloaded as an Excel spreadsheet

Select ‘Run Report’ to run a report and you will see the following message:

The report has been added to the report queue and will be processed by the reporting service shortly. This page will automatically refresh when the report is available.

The report may take a few moments.

Reports only use a date filter unless specified otherwise below. This means filtering the report between 2 dates or leaving the fields blank to return all user information.

5.1 Admin Place of Work: Active Users between 2 specified dates (All Employment)

This report shows who in your team is using the e-LfH platform and the last time they accessed their e-learning. You can filter this report between 2 dates or leave the filter field blank to return all user information.

5.2 Admin Place of Work: Activity between two specified dates

The report shows what all users in your site have attempted on e-LfH and includes the:

  • user’s name
  • user’s e-mail address
  • unit (activity) they worked on
  • scores they have received
  • length of time they spent on their activity
  • date of the activity
  • exam score

5.3 Admin Place of Work: Course Completion

This report shows the completion status of all the users within your team.

In this report you have more options for filtering. You can filter by:

  • NHS Screening Programme
  • course name – individual NHSP units, or modules for the other NHS Screening Programmes
  • surname – find a specific user within your team
  • course status – pick from a drop-down list:
    • any status
    • not started (registered for e-LfH but not started)
    • not completed (started but not finished a unit)
    • completed (finished a unit)
  • date (select the date range for this information to be between)

5.4 Admin Place of Work: Session summary

Use this instead of ‘Admin Place of Work: Course Completion’ when reporting on any of the other NHS Screening Programme e-learning. The functionality and filters are exactly the same.

5.5 Admin Place of Work: Usage Totals between two specified dates

Use this report to get the numbers of active users in your team and basic numbers for completion - no identifiable data will be included.

5.6 Admin Place of Work: User Totals in Location

Use this report to show the number of active users in your team – no identifiable data will be included.

This report does not use filters.

The ‘Total users’ number refers to the number of people registered for e-LfH. The ‘Total users accepted reporting T&Cs’ number refers to the number of people registered for and actually using e-LfH.

5.7 Admin Place of Work: Users created between 2 specified dates

Use this report to see who has an account created within your site.
