Indicative annual range for each year within the sixth carbon budget: addendum to Net Zero Strategy (14 December 2021)

Updated 5 April 2022

1. Under section 12(1) of the Climate Change Act 2008, as soon as is reasonably practicable after making an order setting the carbon budget for a budgetary period, the Secretary of State must lay before Parliament a report setting out an indicative annual range for the net UK carbon account for each year within the period.

2. The Carbon Budget Order 2021 set the carbon budget for the sixth budgetary period (the sixth carbon budget) at 965 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over the 5 years 2033 to 2037. This came into force on 24 June 2021.

3. The Net Zero Strategy: Build Back Greener was published on 19 October 2021, pursuant to section 14 of the Climate Change Act 2008, which places a duty on the Secretary of State to report on proposals and policies for meeting carbon budgets. Included in the Strategy was a provisional indicative range of the UK carbon account over the sixth carbon budget. Following consultation with the other national authorities as required by the Climate Change Act 2008, this addendum finalises that indicative range presented in the Technical Annex of the Strategy: Table 7, p322: Provisional indicative range of the carbon account over the sixth carbon budget. The accounting and methodological notes set out in the Technical Annex of the Strategy apply also to this range.
