Details of the application

The Environment Agency has received an application to vary an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 involving substantial change to a permit from Thompsons of Prudhoe Limited.

Application number

EPR/RP3898ZV/V002

Regulated facility type

The site is a Hazardous waste transfer station where they accept Asbestos separately from the non-hazardous and inert wastes. This application is to extend the permit boundary to include an area for additional storage of waste and add the ability of the site to use a conveyor and crusher on site periodically to treat aggregates and soils and to increase the annual throughput of inert wastes from 15,000 tonnes per annum to 150,000 tonnes per annum meaning the overall annual throughput of wastes on site will be 225,000 tonnes per annum. There is also the addition of EWC 17 06 01* Insulation materials containing asbestos to the existing hazardous asbestos waste accepted in a secure locatable skip. The permit is also being updated to modern conditions. As the site is now proposing to store and treat waste outside they will also need to review their drainage system to prevent discharges from the waste activities into the Park Burn.
