The National Trust has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.
The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application (in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006).
The first application is for a full licence to abstract water from Crosby Gill, near Broughton-in-Furness, Cumbria at National Grid Reference (NGR) SD 19556 94501.
Abstraction of water will take place all year at the following rates:

522 cubic metres an hour

12,528 cubic metres a day

4,572,720 cubic metres a year

At an instantaneous rate not exceeding 145 litres per second.
The water will be used to generate hydro-electric power before it is all discharged 1,020 metres downstream to the same watercourse at NGR SD 20062 93706.
The second application is for an impoundment licence to impede the flow of Crosby Gill at the same location as above, by installing a stone faced concrete intake structure across the face of the watercourse to facilitate abstraction.
