National tariff explanatory notes: mental health

Published 17 December 2013

Applies to England

The following notes aim to clarify points relating to mental health and the national tariff.

Independent providers

Independent providers of national tariff mental health services for working age adults and older people need to use the mandated currencies and follow the rules set out in the national tariff.

All providers with an NHS contract have a contractual obligation to provide relevant data to the Health and Social Care Information Centre. In this case, the relevant data is the mental health minimum dataset.

Mental health cluster currencies - training

The Royal College of Psychiatrists offers training for clinicians on how to use the mental health ‘cluster’ currencies.

All providers, including NHS trusts, foundation trusts, and independent providers, must meet their own in-service training costs.
