Details

The maize and poultry subsectors are an important resource for both household use and income for large numbers of people in Tanzania, with maize being Tanzania’s main crop and poultry farming very common, small-scale and dominated by women farmers. Poultry farming is mainly for household consumption although it can also be an important source of additional income to pay for services such as school fees or medical emergencies. Maize farming is characterised by high costs related to accessing sales markets, and complexities around volatile markets, low use of inputs, post-harvest loss and loss resulting from disease and climatic shocks.
