National Statistics Status of Seafarer Statistics

Updated 11 December 2019

National Statistics Status

National statistics status means that our statistics meet the highest standards of trustworthiness, quality and public value, and it is our responsibility to maintain compliance with these standards.

The designation of the seafarer statistics as National Statistics was confirmed in February 2013 following a full assessment against the Code of Practice by the Office for Statistics Regulation.

Changes to these statistics

Since the latest review by the Office for Statistics Regulation, we have continued to comply with the Code of Practice for Statistics, and have:

  • consulted with users regarding potential changes to the scope of the statistics, and explored whether possible to expand the coverage
  • reviewed the format and timing of the statistical release, publishing slightly earlier each year and with a title which more clearly reflects the coverage of the statistics
  • included references to a range of related information, including apprenticeships data, within the statistical release – addressing feedback from users
  • published new data tables covering seafarers from outside the UK working in the UK industry, based on data from the annual Chamber of Shipping manpower survey
