Guidance on the ultra low emission bus scheme for bus operators within England and Wales. The guidance outlines the:

  • principles
  • current thinking

around how the scheme will be designed but is not the final design of the scheme. The release is the beginning of a consultative process with those who have an interest in the scheme.

The scheme will aim to:

  • increase the uptake of low and ultra low emission buses, speeding up the full transition to an ultra low emission bus fleet
  • improve air quality in urban areas
  • encourage investment in the UK automotive industry

The ultra low emission bus scheme was announced in April 2014. The scheme forms part of the £500 million package to grow the market for ultra-low emission vehicles from 2015 to 2020.
