H.M. Land Registry was established in 1862 as a government department in its own right; it became an executive agency in 1990 and a trading fund in April 1993. Its main aims are: to maintain and develop a stable and effective land registration system throughout England and Wales; to guarantee title to registered estates and interests in land; to provide ready access to up-to-date and guaranteed land information; to provide a land charges and agricultural credits service.

This paper was laid before Parliament in response to a legislative requirement or as a Return to an Address and was ordered to be printed by the House of Commons.
