In 2008 the HPA published a consultation document on its proposal for revised advice on radiological protection objectives for the land-based disposal of solid radioactive waste. Views were sought on all aspects of the advice but specific questions were also given for the respondents to consider. These comments were used to assist HPA in the development of its advice.
This document is the outcome of that consultation exercise. Its purpose is to provide advice, in particular to government departments, on the radiological protection objectives to be applied to the disposal of all types of solid radioactive waste, including wastes arising in gaseous or liquid form which will be converted to solid form prior to disposal.
The environment agencies published revised guidance on requirements for authorisation. Their documents include an appendix describing how they have drawn on HPA advice in the development of the radiological protection criteria in their guidance. The documents from the environment agencies and the HPA contain different approaches and the letters available here clarify the link between the HPA advice and the environment agencies’ regulatory guidance documents.
