Details

Reliable, efficient and safe transport is essential. It allows humanitarian aid to reach those who need it, keeps communities connected and supports trade.

Since the start of Russia’s illegal war against Ukraine in 2022, Kharkiv’s transport network has endured severe damage. It has been forced to adapt to continue functioning. The city is now considering how to rebuild in a way that meets the needs of residents now and in the future.

This strategy:

  • outlines Kharkiv’s current transport challenges
  • reflects residents’ feedback
  • highlights the relative importance of the city’s transport modes
  • aligns with the city’s wider reconstruction plans and strategic frameworks

The strategy also presents a variety of potential projects aimed at helping Kharkiv to ‘build back better’. Each of these has been developed from a vision-led theme.

Environmentally friendly transport

To create a safe and secure transport system that fosters a thriving and liveable Kharkiv, where residents feel confident in their personal safety and protection.

Safe transport

To create a sustainable transport system that contributes positively to the city’s environment, supports healthier communities, and contributes to the long-term resilience of Kharkiv.

Modern and high quality transport

To deliver a comprehensive and integrated transport system that ensures that the mobility needs of all Kharkiv residents and visitors are met with attractive, affordable and accessible transport options.

The strategy has been produced by the Department for Transport and Arup as a member of the UK-Ukraine Transport Partnership.
