This page publishes a joint position paper from the Advisory Committee on Novel Foods and Processes (ACNFP) and the Committee on Toxicity (COT) on establishing a provisional acceptable daily intake (ADI) for cannabidiol (CBD) of 98% or greater purity in foods. The paper was developed following a call by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) for data to support applications for CBD as a novel food ingredient. New toxicological and human data submitted by applicants were reviewed by a joint ACNFP and COT subgroup established to assess the evidence. The ADI is described as provisional because it may be refined as further scientific evidence becomes available. The subgroup also identified gaps in data, particularly relating to reproductive and developmental toxicity and immunotoxicity. As a result, additional caution is advised for vulnerable groups, including pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals trying to conceive, children, immunocompromised individuals and people taking certain medications. This is reflected in the FSA advice on the consumption of CBD.
