Cities and urbanising areas are currently home to the majority of people worldwide, with that figure expecting to rise to over two thirds of the world’s population by 2050. However, increased urbanisation generates a variety of vulnerabilities which combine with climate change hazards to drive urban risk and impacts. Understanding these processes in cities is therefore crucial for successful adaptation to the impacts of climate change.
At its 43rd Plenary Session (Nairobi, Kenya, 11 to 13 April 2016), the IPCC Panel decided that the seventh assessment cycle would include a Special Report on Climate Change and Cities to examine the impacts of climate change on cities, as well as their unique adaptation and mitigation opportunities.
Following an IPCC call for nominations of experts in August 2024, Coordinating Lead Authors, Lead Authors and Review Editors for the Report were selected by the Working Group I, II and III Bureaux in December 2024 from the large number of nominations received.
