Details of the application

The Environment Agency has received a new bespoke application for an environmental permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 from Sizewell C Limited.

Regulated facility type

The application is to enable electricity generation on site during the construction phase of the Sizewell C Ltd (SZC) nuclear new build project. The construction of SZC will utilise both static and mobile generators, fired on liquid fuel, to support construction activities prior to the electrification of the site. The site is expected to have a total installed generator capacity of up to 123.2 MWth, it therefore requires an environmental permit for the following activity: Section 1.1 Part A(1)(a) of the Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR) for the burning of fuel in an appliance with a rated thermal input of 50 or more MW.

  • a non-technical summary

  • a summary of the management system

  • an environmental risk assessment

  • proposed operating techniques, including an assessment of best available techniques

  • management plans to address any key risks

  • modelling and monitoring of any significant emissions to air and land

  • a report on the condition of the site

  • raw material usage and measures for energy efficiency and avoiding waste production
