Infectious diseases in pregnancy screening (IDPS): care pathway

This flowchart (illustration and text description below) describes the infectious diseases in pregnancy screening (IDPS) pathway for women.

1. Identify the eligible population and provide screening information

2. Is the woman known positive for hepatitis B or HIV?

Yes: Notify the screening team so they can contact the woman. The screening team then refers the woman to the relevant speciality for clinical management.

Offer and recommend screening. This includes urgent screening for women presenting, in labour, unbooked or with no record of screening results Go to question 3.

No: Offer and recommend screening. This includes urgent screening for women presenting, in labour, unbooked or with no record of screening results. Go to question 3.

3. Is screening accepted for all infections?

Yes: Take sample(s) for the accepted tests and send to the laboratory. Notify the screening team of any declined tests.

The laboratory then tests and reports as per national algorithms. Go to question 4.

No: Take sample(s) for the accepted tests and send to the laboratory. Notify the screening team of any declined tests.

The laboratory then tests and reports as per national algorithms.

The screening team then formally reoffers and recommends the declined tests. Go to question 6.

4. Are the result(s) negative?

Yes: Go to question 5.

No: The screening team contacts the woman within 10 working days (including women whose pregnancy has ended) and refers to the relevant speciality for clinical management. End of pathway.

5. Is the pregnancy ongoing?

Yes: Discuss the result(s) before or at the next appointment. End of pathway.

No: Inform the woman of the result(s). End of pathway.

6. Was the reoffer accepted?

Yes: Take sample(s) for the accepted tests and send to the laboratory. Notify the screening team of any declined tests.

The laboratory then tests and reports as per national algorithms. Go to question 4.

No: The screening team notifies the multidisciplinary team (MDT) and GP and makes sure the accepted tests are reported. End of pathway.
