Occupational deafness: guidance on completing the claim forms (BI100PD and BI100OD)

Updated 19 February 2024

Use these notes to help you complete the claim forms if you are claiming Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit for occupational deafness (prescribed disease A10).

Eligibility

To be eligible for Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit (IIDB) for the prescribed disease A10 occupational deafness you must have:

  • hearing loss of 50dB or more in each ear

  • worked, or worked close to someone, for 10 years or more, using specific tools or machines that are likely to cause deafness

You can use different periods to make up the 10 years.

Example

If you are claiming on 19 February 2020 you can have worked, or worked closely to someone, using specific tools or machines that are likely to cause deafness for:

  • the 3 years 1 Feb 2000 to 31 Jan 2003
  • the 2 years 1 Feb 2008 to 31 Jan 2010
  • the 5 years 13 Feb 2015 to 12 Feb 2020

Periods of self-employment do not count.

You must have been doing that work within 5 years of the date you are claiming from.

Find a list of tools or machines that are likely to cause deafness under disease number A10 occupational deafness.

How to claim

Fill in forms BI100PD and BI100OD.

Form BI100PD, Part 3: About your work or your approved employment training scheme or course and your disease

When you fill in ‘Part 3: About your work or your approved employment training scheme or course and your disease’, tell us:

  • what disease or diseases you have

  • details of each of the jobs or training where you used, or worked closely to someone using, tools or machines that are likely to cause deafness

Your employment information must:

  • cover 10 years or more

  • show that you were doing that work or training within the last 5 years

You may want to think about the employers you worked for the longest. This could cover the 10 years needed and you may not need to give details of every employer.

If you need to tell us about more than 2 employers, use the last page of the claim form BI100PD to give us the extra information. Make sure you give the same information about these employers and the work you did as you give in Part 3.

Form BI100OD

When you complete the BI100OD form you need to tell us about the same employers as you told us about in the BI100PD.

For each employer you need to tell us about the tools or machines you used or worked close to someone using them.

Contacting your employers

We may need to contact any of the employers you tell us about.
