1. Other regulated words and expressions

The use of any of these words and expressions in a company or business name could be a criminal offence. The list is not exhaustive and applicants should carry out their own checks to ensure their proposed name is lawful.

1.1 Anzac

The use of this word in a company or business name could commit an offence under The “Anzac” (Restriction on Trade Use of Word) Act 1916. The restrictions can be viewed on legislation.gov.uk.

1.2 Architect

The Architects Act 1997 protects this title. To use this word in your proposed name you must provide a letter or email confirming you are authorised to use this title from:

1.9 Commonhold Association

As specified in The Commonhold (Amendment) Regulations 2009 (SI No. 2363), this expression can only be used in the name of a limited by guarantee company’.

1.10 Contact lens / Contact lenses

If your proposed company or business intends to fit contact lenses, you must provide evidence that you are a registered medical practitioner, optometrist or dispensing optician authorised to carry out this activity.

Alternatively, if you are a manufacturer or supplier of contact lenses (but do not fit lenses) you will need to confirm this with your application.

1.11 Credit Union

This expression cannot be used in a company or business name. For further information, contact the relevant body.
