In April 2021, the Home Office announced that 18 police forces with the highest levels of Serious Violence would receive funding to deliver enhanced hot spot policing. The aim of this programme, called Grip, is to deter Serious Violence through visible patrol activity in areas where crime is most concentrated. In September 2021, 2 further police forces were awarded bespoke funding to conduct hot spot policing.
This evaluation provides an assessment of how much hot spot policing was delivered, as well as the impact and cost effectiveness of Grip and bespoke-funded hot spot policing for the year ending March 2022. It then makes recommendations to the Home Office and police forces themselves to maximise the programmes impact.
