Guidance regarding status where sufficient documents cannot be produced. IPS can issue a passport only where a person can establish their claim to British nationality by producing official documents recording the facts of birth and descent (or grant of nationality) upon which their claim rests.

However, the Home Office has discretion to recognise a claim where the official documents cannot be produced. This document outlines the use of “status letters” issued by the Home Office for this purpose.
