This study develops and tests a bespoke methodology for estimating the economic contribution of the UK’s heritage sector, with the aim of creating a reliable approach that could be used to produce official statistics for the sector, in line with Department for Culture, Media & Sport’s (DCMS) Sector Economic Estimates.
The bespoke methodology combines Standard industrial Classification (SIC) and Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) data; it is referred to as a SIC-SOC methodology. It builds on an existing methodology used by Historic England (HE) in its research series undertaken by CEBR, titled “The heritage sector in England and its impact on the economy”.
This research (jointly funded between DCMS and HE) enhances the existing SIC-SOC methodology by taking a data-driven approach to review the list of heritage industries and occupations, as well as reviewing and updating the assumptions and data which feed into the methodology.
