This topic was initially referred to the HAIRS group in 2008 by the Veterinary Laboratories Agency (now the Animal and Plant Health Agency) for guidance on the potential zoonotic risks to those who may come into contact with stranded marine mammals. The risk assessment was updated in 2013.
