Freedom of Information Act 2000: Government budget total

Thank you for your enquiry of 15 August 2019, which we have considered under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the FOI Act).

You asked for the following information:

“… how much money the governments budget is in total”

I can confirm that HM Treasury does hold information within the scope of your request.

Government expenditure from previous years and planned expenditure for future years is published by the Treasury in a document called Public Expenditure Statistical Analyses (PESA). One of the most commonly used aggregates for summarising total public sector expenditure is called Total managed expenditure. This aggregate can be seen in table 1.1 and, for example, total managed expenditure in 2018-19 was £810.2 billion. In 2019-20 it is forecasted, at the time of PESA, to be £840.7 billion.

A link to the latest edition of PESA is published on the GOV.UK website at:

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/public-expenditure-statistical-analyses-2019

PESA also includes analysis of the budgets of UK Government departments and other data breakdowns.
The Treasury recently completed the 2019 Spending Round in order to set departmental budgets for 2020-21, in line with the government’s current commitments. More information about the Spending Round 2019 is available at the links below:
