Campylobacter and non-typhoidal Salmonella infections in England: Q1 2023 to Q3 2025
Updated 18 December 2025
Applies to England
The quarterly trend of laboratory reports for Campylobacter species (spp.) and non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. for the period Q1 2023 to Q3 2025 are shown in Table 1, this data includes infections acquired overseas.
The data is accurate as of 18 November 2025 and as extracted from live surveillance systems, is reported as provisional and may be subject to change due to late notifications and de-duplication, therefore previously published totals may differ slightly.
Key points
In the third quarter of 2025, there has been a decrease in the number of confirmed laboratory reports for Campylobacter spp. when compared to the same period in 2024, and the number of non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. (NTS) reports were comparable for both years in the third quarter.
The total number of Campylobacter spp. laboratory reports increased from 60,055 reports in 2023 to 70,352 reports in 2024 (up 17.1%). From 2023 Q1 to Q3 there was an increase of 18.0% in the total number of Campylobacter spp. laboratory reports (n=44,855) by comparison to the same period in 2024 (n=53,080). Although the number of reports decreased from 2024 Q3 (n=20,723) to 2025 Q3 (n=18,996) by 8.3%, overall in 2025 Q1 to Q3, the total number of Campylobacter spp. laboratory reports (n=53,907) remained comparable to the total number for the same period in 2024 (up 1.5%).
The total number of confirmed NTS laboratory reports increased by 17.1%, from 8,872 reports in 2023 to 10,388 reports in 2024. From 2023 Q1 to Q3 there was an increase of 17.0% in the total number of confirmed NTS laboratory reports (n=6,559) by comparison to the same period in 2024 (n=7,675). In 2025 Q1 to Q3, the total number of confirmed NTS laboratory reports (n=7,738) remained comparable to the total number for the same period in 2024 (up 0.8%).

Data sources
Data for this report were extracted from the UKHSA live laboratory reporting database, the Second Generation Surveillance System (SGSS) for the Campylobacter spp. and non-typhoidal Salmonella serovar data, therefore the totals are subject to change.
Data caveats
As SGSS is a live laboratory reporting system, the data presented here is subject to change and historical totals may differ slightly.
