Campylobacter and non-typhoidal Salmonella infections in England: Q1 2023 to Q2 2025

The quarterly trend of laboratory reports for Campylobacter species (spp.) and non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. for the period Q1 2023 to Q2 2025 are shown in Table 1, this data includes infections acquired overseas.
The data is accurate as of 20 August 2025 and, as extracted from live surveillance systems, is reported as provisional and may be subject to change due to late notifications and de-duplication. Previously published totals may therefore differ slightly.
Main points
In the second quarter of 2025 there have been slight decreases in the number of confirmed laboratory reports for both Campylobacter spp. and non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. (NTS) when compared to the same period in 2024.
The total number of Campylobacter spp. laboratory reports increased from 60,055 reports in 2023 to 70,352 reports in 2024 (up 17.1%). Comparison of the number of Campylobacter spp. laboratory reports in the first quarter of each year, 2023 to 2025, indicated rises in the number of reports by 22.6% and 23.2%, from 10,588 reports in Q1 2023 to 12,985 in Q1 2024, then to 15,997 in Q1 2025. There was an increase of 22.7% in the number of Campylobacter spp. laboratory reports in the second quarter of 2024 (n=19,372) when compared to the same period in 2023 (n=15,791), and then a decrease of 3.6% to 18,677 reports in Q2 2025.
Similarly, the total number of confirmed NTS laboratory reports increased by 17.1%, from 8,872 reports in 2023 to 10,388 reports in 2024. Comparison of the number of confirmed NTS laboratory reports in the first quarter of each year, 2023 to 2025, shows a rise of 16.0%, from 1,328 reports in Q1 2023 to 1,541 in Q1 2024, then a lower increase of 3.2% to 1,591 reports in Q1 2025. There was an increase of 12.3% in the number of confirmed NTS laboratory reports in the second quarter of 2024 (n=2,387) when compared to the same period in 2023 (n=2,126), and then a decrease of 1.9% to 2,342 reports in Q2 2025.
