Ethnicity Equality at the Intellectual Property Office
Published 28 October 2026
Workforce representation
8.3% of our people have declared that they are from an ethnic minority background with 4.56% Asian, 1.46% Black and 1.98% Mixed/Other.
Encouraging colleagues to share diversity information helps us better understand our workforce, identify barriers and target support where it is needed. We want to continue to build a workplace where talented people from all backgrounds can belong and thrive. We also want our workforce to increasingly reflect the diversity of the communities we recruit from.
All metrics / figures are taken from the 2026 Annual Civil Service Employment Survey (ACSES).

Eliminating discrimination, harassment and victimisation
We do not tolerate discrimination, harassment or victimisation. We maintain policies, guidance and reporting routes designed to support colleagues and address inappropriate behaviour when it occurs.
We continue to develop managers and leaders to create inclusive working environments and to respond appropriately to concerns raised by our people. Equality considerations are embedded within policy development, decision making and organisational change through the use of Equality Impact Assessments.
Advancing equality of opportunity
We work to identify and reduce barriers that may affect recruitment, career progression, development and participation.
Our activities include:
- monitoring workforce diversity data and trends
- reviewing recruitment and promotion practices
- supporting inclusive talent and development opportunities
- working with staff networks to understand lived experiences
- improving the quality of diversity data to better inform decision making
We recognise the importance of understanding where barriers exist and taking evidence-based action to address them.
Fostering good relations
We aim to create an environment where people from all backgrounds feel valued, respected and able to contribute fully.
We support a range of learning, awareness and engagement activities that promote understanding of different cultures, experiences and perspectives. Our staff networks play an important role in raising awareness, providing peer support and helping us improve our policies and practices.
