  • the discharging of matter or effluent that is poisonous or injurious to fish, spawn, spawning areas or food of fish – Section 4 of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975

It relates to unauthorised sewage discharges from a surface water outfall at Earhart Way, Hounslow into the River Crane on or before 17 June 2014, 19 March 2015 and 14 September 2016.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute:

  • £33,000 to London Wildlife Trust
  • £67,000 to Friends of the River Crane Environment

They will also cover the Environment Agency’s costs and carry out actions to stop offending, prevent a recurrence or restore any harm.

Thames Water Utilities Limited (reference EU593)

The offence was operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(1). It relates to:

  • the removal of ash waste from 2 Sludge Powered Generators (SPGs) at Beckton and Crossness Sewage Treat Works in London
  • its unauthorised disposal at a non-hazardous waste landfill site in Essex between 1 January 2014 and 30 April 2016

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute: £1,000,000 to London Wildlife Trust.

Yorkshire Water Services Limited (reference EU745)

The offence was operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(1). It relates to the unauthorised discharge of sewage into an unnamed watercourse off Albion Road, Athersley South, Barnsley on the 18 May 2019.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute: £150,000 to Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.

They will also cover the Environment Agency’s costs and carry out actions to stop offending, prevent a recurrence or restore any harm.

The enforcement undertaking was accepted on 23 September 2024.

Energy Works (Hull) Limited (reference EU808)

The offence was failure to comply with a permit condition (waste operation) – Regulation 38(2). It relates to non-compliance with its fire protection plan at its Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) plant at Cleveland Street, Hull on 26 September 2020.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute:

  • £10,000 to Environmental Management Solutions Yorkshire
  • £10,000 to Conservation Volunteers Humber and East Yorkshire
  • £10,000 to Dove House Hospice

Wessex Water Services Limited (reference EU821)

The offences were:

  • operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(1)

It relates to non-compliance with permit conditions at Shepton Mallet Water Recycling Centre and fish kill resulting from the discharge of sewage into the River Sheppey, Shepton Mallet between 31 July 2019 and 6 August 2019.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute £103,000 to Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group South West.

Thames Water Utilities Limited (reference EU843)

The offence was operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(1). It relates to the discharge of sewage sludge from Beckton sludge main on to land and into watercourses. The discharge occurred between Beckton sewage treatment works and Riverside sewage treatment works, between 13 May 2016 and 5 June 2023. 

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute £373,000 to Thames21.

Imerys Minerals Limited (reference EU867)

The offence was operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) - Regulation 38(1). It relates to 6 unauthorised discharges of china clay effluent at Goonamarris, Goverseth-Noppies, Bugle, Treverbyn, Winnipeg and Maclarens, Cornwall between 15 September 2021 and 25 July 2023.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute £430,000 to Westcountry Rivers Trust.

They will also cover the Environment Agency’s costs and carry out actions to stop offending, prevent a recurrence or restore any harm.

The enforcement undertaking was accepted on 9 September 2025.

Severn Trent Water Limited (reference EU868)

The offence was failure to comply with a permit condition (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(2). It relates to 2 unauthorised sewage discharges from Barston wastewater treatment works into the River Blythe, Solihull on or about 23 November 2020 and between 15 February and 16 February 2021.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute:

  • £327,000 to Severn Rivers Trust
  • £373,000 to Trent Rivers Trust

They will also cover the Environment Agency’s costs and carry out actions to stop offending, prevent a recurrence or restore any harm.

Thames Water Utilities Limited (reference EU886)

The offences were:

  • operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(1)
  • the discharging of matter or effluent that is poisonous or injurious to fish, spawn, spawning areas or food of fish – Section 4 of the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975

It relates to the unauthorised discharge of inlet launder effluent from Basingstoke wastewater treatment works to enter an unmapped surface water drain and then into Petty’s Brook, Basingstoke. It occurred between 7 September and 21 September 2020.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute £200,000 to South East Rivers Trust.

Aston Management International Limited (reference EU891)

The offence was failure to comply with a permit condition (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(2). It relates to the discharge of untreated sewage effluent from Hustyns Holiday resort to a tributary of the River Camel, Cornwall between 27 August 2021 and 1 November 2021.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute £6,500 to Cornwall Wildlife Trust.

Severn Trent Water Limited (reference EU915)

The offence was failure to comply with a permit condition (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(2). It relates to the discharge of poor-quality final effluent from Sutton in Ashfield sewage treatment works into the River Maun, Nottinghamshire and fish kill on 13 December 2020.

This was a reactive offer.

They will contribute £1,000,000 to Trent Rivers Trust.

The offence was operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(1). It relates to the unauthorised discharge of slurry from Temon Farm into Poltross Burn, Brampton, Cumbria on 15 June 2022.

United Utilities Water Limited (reference EU947)

The offence was failure to comply with a permit condition (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(2). It relates to 3 exceedances of specified limits in sewage discharges from Ashton-under-Lyne waste water treatment works, Tameside on 2 August 2022.

Skirwith Abbey Limited (reference EU953)

The offences were:

  • operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (water discharge activity) – Regulation 38(1)
  • failure to ensure that organic manure or manufactured fertiliser is not applied to agricultural land in accordance with Regulation 3 – Regulation 11 of the Reduction and Prevention of Agriculture Diffuse Pollution (England) Regulations 2018
  • failure to ensure that organic manure or manufactured fertiliser is applied to agricultural land in accordance with Regulation 4(1) – Regulation 11 of the Reduction and Prevention of Agriculture Diffuse Pollution (England) Regulations 2018

They relate to slurry entering the Aigill Sike watercourse due to the failure to plan, apply and take reasonable precautions when spreading organic manure on land near Abbey Farm, Skirwith, Penrith, Cumbria on 19 February 2020.

They relate to 2 unauthorised sewage discharges into Wick Pond and an unnamed watercourse resulting in fish kills at Egham Wick, Englefield Green, Surrey on 20 October 2017 and 7 August 2020.

The offences were:

They relate to nine sewage discharges from Earlswood Sewage Treatment Works into the Earlswood Brook, Redhill, Surrey, including one incident resulting in a fish kill, between 26 July 2013 and 23 May 2019.

It relates to the unauthorised discharge of diesel fuel from its premises at Nursling Industrial Estate, near Southampton into the River Test between 5 May 2021 and 15 July 2021.

Hawk and Owl Trust (reference - EU1032)

The offence was operating without or other than in accordance with an environmental permit (flood risk activity) – Regulation 38(1). It relates to unauthorised works involving reprofiling the river bank of the River Wensum, Sculthorpe Moor, Fakenham, Norfolk between 26 August 2021 and 17 September 2021.
