The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. The application is for a licence to impound the River Wansbeck at Newton Underwood, at National Grid Reference NZ 15348 85370.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

Further details of the proposal are:

  • The licensing of an existing 350 metre long dam spanning the River Wansbeck, including gated culverts including a crayfish and eel culvert and a salmon and trout culvert designed to allow species to pass the structure
  • The dam will not hold back water during normal flows but during extreme high flows the structure is designed to restrict downstream flow to reduce the risk of flooding
  • The dam will hold back a maximum volume of 1.4million cubic metres of water and will help to protect the downstream area from flooding up to the 1 in 137 year flood event
