The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a new full abstraction licence to replace licence 7/35/06/*G/0113A which expired on 31 March 2014.

The application is to abstract water from the chalk groundwater aquifer at the site of the Sewage Treatment Works, Earl Soham, Suffolk, National Grid Reference TM 23245 62737.

The water will be transferred to provide river support to the Earl Soham Stream and the River Deben at times of low flow for environmental purposes. The water may also be used for the purpose of equipment testing. The application is to abstract water all year at the following maximum quantities:

  • 173 cubic metres per hour
  • 4,150 cubic metres per day
  • 415,000 cubic metres per year

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application, in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Paragraph 2 of Schedule 2 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The licence shall be viewed as granted, unless the Secretary of State, either as a result of any representations made about the proposal or otherwise, instructs or asks for an application to be made to them.
