Applies to England

The Environment Agency is applying to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for a new licence to replace a licence which expired on 31 March 2015.

The expired licence permitted all year abstraction of 7,645,000 cubic metres per year from thirteen chalk boreholes for the purpose of providing river support, known as the Rhee Groundwater Support Scheme.

The authorised quantities applied for are lower than the previous licence allowed. The proposed annual quantity will be reduced to 6,867,840 cubic metres per year. Only seven of the previously licensed boreholes are still required, one additional borehole at Thriplow is proposed.
