This guidance was withdrawn on

This opportunity was for a temporary period and is now closed. You can no longer register an interest.

Please contact your local authority directly for more information about opportunities available for educational psychologists in your local area.

Applies to England

The Department for Education is inviting educational psychologists (EPs) to express an interest through their local authorities in providing temporary support for children and young people returning to educational settings in September 2020.

EPs will need to contact their local authority to express an interest. The opportunity will last for up to 13 weeks. The closing date for expressions of interest is 30 November 2020.

This opportunity is open to:

  • former EPs who may be interested in temporarily returning to the profession
  • practising EPs who may have additional capacity to offer temporary support

Expressing an interest

EPs can express an interest in this opportunity if they:

  • left the EP profession after January 2017 (unless subject to fitness to practice concerns in the past)
  • are a registered EP working part-time who would like temporarily to offer additional support
  • are a registered EP but not currently in employment

This opportunity is only available to fully qualified EPs.

The Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) temporary register

If an EP left the profession after January 2017, they will already have been automatically added to the HCPC temporary register set up in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

There is no cost, and EPs can check their details, and find their temporary registration number, which they will need when they contact their LA to express an interest in the temporary opportunity.

Temporary registrants who later want to return to full registration will need to satisfy the return to practice requirements.

Any work done while on the temporary register will contribute to meeting the full return requirements.

If an EP left the profession before January 2017, they are unable to use this route to return. They can of course return to full registration by satisfying the full return to practice requirements.

Terms and conditions for educational psychologists (EPs) temporarily returning to practice

An EP’s terms and conditions will be agreed individually with the local authority with which they are placed. This will not be a permanent contract.

The duration of an EP’s contribution to the temporary increase in capacity is to be agreed with the relevant local authority. local authorities may wish to offer work beyond the initial 13 week period.

The opportunity to express an interest via the route in this guidance closes on 30 November 2020.

Contacting local authorities

To express an interest, contact the relevant local authority via email. Where a local authority has multiple email addresses, send an email to all of them to ensure a response as some contacts may be on leave.

Some of the work may still involve working remotely. The local authority will discuss the EP’s preferences, the support they can offer, and whether a suitable placement is available.

Expressing an interest does not commit an EP to taking up any offer made by the local authority.
