Flowchart: determining harm for people with delayed DES screening

This flowchart (illustration and text description below) shows the process for determining harm in cases of delayed diabetic eye screening (DES).

1. Was the person referred at the next screening episode?

No: assume no harm. End of pathway.

Yes: determine if the person was not treated, or had treatment arranged when seen.

2. For a person not treated when seen, do they have reduced vision due to diabetic retinopathy or maculopathy?

No: assume no harm. End of pathway.

Yes: investigate individually.

3. For a person who has treatment arranged when seen, do they have reduced vision due to diabetic retinopathy or maculopathy?

No: assume no harm. End of pathway.

Yes: investigate individually, preferably asking an independent opthalmologist to look at the person’s images and records.
