DCMS commissioned Morris Hargreaves McIntyre to conduct research to understand the factors that might drive or constrain museum visitation following an unexpected drop in visits to DCMS sponsored museums across England between 2014 and 2018.

This research considered political, economic, social, technological and environmental factors, as well as factors stemming from activity at the museums, which might have affected visitor numbers. This research used surveys, focus groups, econometrics and secondary research to test various hypotheses about visitor numbers. The analysis of the key factors that have had the greatest positive or negative impact on visits generated a series of recommendations for the future.

This report was commissioned prior to the COVID-19 pandemic and completed in March 2020.
