Normalised organ doses for x-ray computed tomography calculated using Monte Carlo techniques

1. How to obtain the data package

To receive the data package and its accompanying PDF manual, please email medicalradiationdoses@phe.gov.uk.

2. What the data package does

The data package is intended to promote more widespread assessment of radiation doses to patients from computed tomography (CT) examinations, to satisfy UK and European law on the optimisation of patient doses.

It contains the result of 23 series of Monte Carlo calculations. These model the conditions of exposure for a range of common makes of CT scanner.

Data for each series of calculations are provided as separate data files for use with computers operating under PC/MS-DOS. Each data file contains 208 sets of normalised dose data for 27 organs or regions of a mathematical phantom, corresponding to irradiation under specific CT conditions of every 5 mm thick transverse slab of the phantom.

The package contains details of:

  • the format of the normalised organ dose data
  • how to use the data to assess typical patient doses from individual CT scanners

A useful and freely available specific Windows-based tool for the manipulation of these CT dose coefficients has been developed by ImPACT.

The data package was originally created by D G Jones and P C Shrimpton of the National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB). The functions of the NRPB are now undertaken by Public Health England.
