How to become a Sponsor Group on Communities for Afghans

Information about how to put yourself forward as a Sponsor Group on Communities for Afghans.

The Afghan Welcome Project

You will need to:

  • be a group of at least six volunteers from at least two households (including one ‘Named’ Sponsor)
  • Have settled status (Named Sponsor only)
  • Be willing to support an Afghan family or individual for three years
  • Be able to find appropriate accommodation for an Afghan Household
  • Pass relevant checks (including but not limited to DBS checks)
  • Provide references
  • Regularly engage with your local council

Pre-existing organisations may come forward to act as Sponsor Groups, but at least six Sponsor Group members will still need to be registered as part of the scheme.

Once the Principal Sponsor have checked your suitability and eligibility, you will be referred for training conducted by the International Rescue Committee. Your Principal Sponsor and the training provider will be on hand to help you through the sponsorship.
