The Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, is working with partners to develop and test an Afghan sponsorship project, modelled on the existing Community Sponsorship scheme, from February 2024. DLUHC will lead this project in conjunction with Citizens UK and ensure the provision of sponsor groups and properties to undergo checks and matching for families.
This is a specific project being stood up to support Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) households into accommodation as part of the government’s commitment to this cohort.
The project will test the suitability of an approach that strengthens the role of voluntary and civil society organisations to provide ongoing support at a local level. We will monitor the progress of the project to better understand the ability of this type of scheme to support eligible persons to resettle in the UK more broadly.
A further policy update will be provided at a later date, dependent on the outcomes of the project.
